Dvořák’s ‘Mass in D Major’: This work is one of the most eloquent testimonies to Dvořák’s humble faith, his natural humility and his true joy of life. The Mass was written in 1887 and was first performed for the consecration of a new chapel in Luzany, Bavaria. The six movements are rich in melodic and harmonic imagery.
Poulenc’s ‘Gloria’: This work, composed in 1959, is a ‘tour de force’ for chorus, soprano solo and orchestra. Poulenc’s very distinctive style relies principally on strong musical contrasts. The harmony moves between Stravinskian dissonance and sensuous chord progressions; vigorous counterpoint alternates with lyrical melodic writing. There’s a captivating mixture of solemnity and mischievous exuberance about this work.
Todd ‘The Call of Wisdom’: Many will recall first hearing this specially commissioned work on 5th June 2012 on the occasion of a Service of Thanksgiving at St. Paul’s Cathedral, for the Diamond Jubilee of our Sovereign. This is a powerful piece, written for mixed choirs with words by Michael Hampel, based on Proverbs 8 ……. “I am here, I am with you. I have called: do you hear me?”
